Tiberghien colleague Rik Smet receives honorable mention for prestigious award

In June last year our colleague Rik Smet successfully defended his doctoral thesis on tax treaty making in federations.

On June 3rd 2021, at the annual congress of the European Association of Tax Law Professors (EATLP), he received an honorable mention for the EATLP Tax Thesis Award for this groundbreaking research. This Award is a joint venture between the EATLP and the European Commission.

A short summary of Rik’s thesis can be found here.

Tiberghien is obviously proud of this achievement by one of her own and wants to congratulate Rik for it. We also congratulate the winner of the Award, Luisa Scarcella, for her wonderful research titled ‘Taxing Cryptocurrencies. The VAT treatment of Bitcoin as a case-study’, and Jasper Bossuyt, who received a second honorable mention for his thesis on ‘the legal status of extrinsic instruments for the interpretation of tax treaties’.

Later this year, Rik’s thesis will be published in length with Intersentia-Cambridge.
